Flemish Beer Masquerading as Pumpkin Beer, and Pumpkin Soup

Posted By I Love Pumpkins on October 17, 2008

Another great pumpkin night! We started at the City Beer Store with Aaron and his buddy Erick who was in town from Seattle.

Erick quickly became my hero when he professed that “there is a mystical relationship between pumpkins and cinnamon.” Right on, Erick! Does this mean you’ll create a pumpkin-and-cinnamon software stack for mobile?

City Beer Store always has new things on tap. The owners Beth & Craig really know their stuff, and their selection of beers is stunning. They were selling 3 different pumpkin beers in bottles when we visited: Dogfish Punkin Ale, Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale and Buffalo Bill’s. They also had one “pumpkin” beer on tap which I tried called Jolly Pumpkin Brewing Company’s “La Roja.” It wasn’t officially pumpkin at all, but I had such a good time tasting it and talking about it with Beth & Craig that I decided to review it anyway!

Erick tried the Dogfish Punkin Ale and shared some with me. We’d have to agree with reviewer Master P. that it’s got a solid pumpkin taste in there, a hint of nutmeg, and a seriously delicious brown sugar flavor. “A good winter beer,” said Erick. “It needs a fireplace.”

Erick also informed me that one can make a canoe out of a pumpkin like they did in Vermont, where “local local business leaders raced in giant hollowed-out gourds, in a competition of size and speed.”
Maybe I’ll work on a pumpkin canoe for my November camping trip with Aaron?

Next we ventured to Absinthe in Aaron’s fabulous neighborhood, Hayes Valley. I was delighted to find pumpkin soup on the menu: curry leaf scented pumpkin puree with vindaloo oil and cilantro. It was exceptionally good, so I contacted the chef to find out what she’d done to make it so good! Here’s her secret plus some insights into her plans for pumpkins and squash this season.
