Store-bought bagels are dense and lack the “chewy-outside-soft-inside” thrill of a real fresh bagel. As such, Noah’s Pumpkin Bagel was far superior to Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Spice bagel in texture. However, both bagels are equally guilty of tasting just like regular old cinnamon bagels minus the raisins. Tastes decent, but not pumpkinny.

Nonetheless, I’m giving a shout-out to both Trader Joe’s and Noah’s for promoting the great pumpkin through their products. It’s tough to achieve a lot of pumpkin flavor in dry baked goods like bagels and scones (versus muffins and loaves) because chemically there’s a definite limit to how much liquid can go into these kinds of breads. Pumpkin puree is just plain wet by nature, and there’s a limit to how much you can add before upsetting the chemistry of the bagel or the scone.

By the way, I never keep bread at home, so I was thrilled to discover that I still had the hilarious Wal*Mart toaster Megan gave me for my birthday years ago! This bagel tasted good toasted, with fat free cheddar melted on top, and drizzled with maple syrup.
